One night my daughter asked, “What’s the difference between UX and UI?”
I decided to sketch her a picture to explain. It’s no Picasso, but it seemed to get the idea across.
I tweeted a picture of it, and there was quite a response, I was pretty shocked! It was tweeted, RTd, favorited, liked and posted several thousand times! It was even translated into other languages!
After receiving a bunch of requests, it’s now been made available for purchase as an art print, t-shirt, mug, etc. here: http://society6.com/userexperiencerocks/UXUI-Bike-Sketch-User-Experience-Rocks
Folks have been asking if they can use it in presentations and articles, feel free to use it as an example if you’d like!Β Just list my name, Twitter handle, and web address with it (Jennifer Aldrich @jma245 http://userexperiencerocks.com) when you use it. If you want to include it in a print publication, just reach out to me and we can discuss it!
And if you have time, shoot me a tweet or comment on this post to let me know how you’re using it! I’d love to connect!
Thank you so much for all of the love and support folks! I β€ our UX and design communities!!! π
Have an outstanding day!

To anyone who has been confused as to what the difference between UI and UX is, this handy-dandy picture should help.
Thank you so much for sharing my doodle, Matt! π
That’s an excellent way to explain the difference. I was working on a presentation that talks about this topic. Im planning to use this image with attribution.
Thank you !
Thank you so much for including it Anand! π
Jennifer, awesome simplification of the difference between the UX and the UI. It’s awesome and I cannot WAIT to have an opportunity to use it in a presentation. If I do I will make sure to give you FULL credit. π
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Eric! If you do end up using it in the future, I’d love to hear about how you integrate it! π Thank you so much for commenting and for the doodle love! π
Millennials will soon take over! Have you seen this video, where Kevin Bacon explains the 1980’s to them? It’s hilarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09q04Dlh7r8

Your daughter asked that question to you? She must’ve breathed all things digital since she was a baby. Good drawing. π
Haha She did! She has recently become very curious about what I do for a living. It’s actually been a pretty neat experience trying to explain it to her! She also taught herself how to code JavaScript prompts and alerts and buttons recently, after checking out a course on treehouse and the code academy website. She got a kick out of showing her friends at school!
It’s a great picasso.. sketching at it’s finest!! I think I will use this as my go to image when explaining to new clients and stakeholders what UX and UI does so that they too get it!! Thanks for sharing Jen!
haha Thanks!! And that’s awesome!!! I’m so glad someone else can use it! π You’re so very welcome! π
